I found one a few years back. To bad it was already hit by a car. I tend to think someone just threw it out the car. It looked fine and not hit till I picked it up and blood started coming out of its moutn.

Funny thought riding down the road and passing it then running every native species though my mind, then asking myself "What the heck was that?!?"

Amazing how many pets and released pets show up. I get a few emails a year.

Okay if you do-I'll post the different ones I have photos of from PA-I'll keep that green/brown Eastern Ratsnake found just outside the Eastern range in my file until then. It's so hard to keep up with the changes over the last 2 years--scientific names and all. LOL! hmm maybe I should post it anyway...

Do you seperate the Eastern Ratsnake from the Midland Ratsnake here? Not sure how the CNAH came up with that and making the Yellow the same as the Eastern Ratsnake and all that stuff. DNA? Wow! The PAFBC made me get a permit to keep my CB OLD Yellow Ratsnake....and my Greenish ones....(yellow X black)

Anyway-if you do then I have both photographed..by location. If not-no biggie-except to the PAFBC I guess...confused....

I live in northwestern part of Northampton County. A old section. Sometimes I get into trouble here at home for bringing the local critters in the house for a couple of days. The turtle in a 3 gallon crock wasnt too bad for a couple of hours, but she doesnt like Snakes in the Aquarium or Catfish in the bathtub. I guess she doenst have the same ' wonder ' I do, or the sense of humor.

Local history states that William Penn himself used to come to my little village. Ben Franklin also. It was the place to be I suppose. But time has passed this little burb by... but rumor has it that we may be getting a Traffic light down at the intersection in years to come.

The turtle has been released.

I live along the same highway that the turtle was crossing, not more than 1/3 mile. Had that turtle continued across the highway, it would have been getting farther away from water. There are no ponds or creeks on that side of the road that I know of... unless you want the turtle to walk miles. If it is about to lay eggs, the off spring would have had a tough time getting to water, having to cross the roadway again.

Anyway, it was released along a stream. It dove right in, then swam downstream after about 10 minutes and settled in along the bank, along side a sandbar or gravel.

I enjoyed the experience. The last time I had contact with a turtle in the neighborhood, it was a box turtle. I always wanted to see a Eastern Painted Turtle up close. Now I have. It was about 8 inches long and about 5 inches wide at the hind. There was no hinge on the yellow belly. A sorta pretty looking reptile. ( I didnt use proper terms because I dont have any of the Alphabet behind my name.)

thanks,

Getting hit by a car is not "Nature running it's course". Best thing for the turtle is to put it on the side to which it was crossing. May have been laying eggs or returning to it's pond.

I was on a very busy highway this morning and I noticed a small blob near the fog line of my lane. As I got closer, I saw it was a turtle of some kind as I whizzed past.

I went up the road about a tenth of a mile and turned around before too much traffic came along and sped back to the turtle. By then it was in the right tire track of the lane and traffic was coming.

I turned onto the opposite shoulder and parked close to the white line and turned my flashers on.

I got out of my pick-up and walked back to the turtle before traffic got too close and picked him up.

After I got home I looked it up on your website, and I find it is a Eastern Painted.

I plan to release it later this afternoon.

Before I hear about letting nature take its course, and that I should have let the turtle chance the highway and possibly thin out the gene pool...

I like turtles, it wasnt some speedy critter which could cross a busy highway in seconds. It was a turtle. And I did what I did. Live with it. He/She will.

Period.

Just got back from a little cruising and a couple visits to the pools. Moved another 30 off the road, and seen few DOR. Seen more peepers. Went to visit the pools and the sallies were active. Video some and took pictures, was cool watching them come up for a gulp of air. They sure dont like the light, although when we put the red light on them they didnt seem to mind it as much. About 11:30 some peepers starting calling, the first ones we heard. Also had a visit from a state cop, thought we were aliens with the different color lights.LOL Told him what we were up to and he said he would keep an eye out for them. He thought it was cool. He was a nice guy. All in all was a great day, we found some new pools, saved some more sallies, got some wet and muddy clothes and now its bed time. I forgot its daylight saving time.

Checked the pools today and there are sperm deposites everwhere. Going out tonight to see if we can see the females pick up the sperm. We also went to another area and found more sperm deposits. Them look like they were there for a couple days or more. I'm told they may be from Jeffersons. Will be keeping an eye on all of this.

What a night, and I dont think we even seen the half of it! We were road cruising and seen spotteds everwhere. The one place it reminded me of cattle crossing the road. This was our first time in the spring doing this. We took my mother with and she loved it. The first one we seen she want to get out and get it to help it across the road. I was amazed at how into it she was. We also found a new place where they cross the road. My oldest daughter and mother at one point were running up the road infront of the vehicle grabbing them and moving them across the road. Was so cool! Also seen a pile of peepers crossing, we helped them to. It was sad to see all the road kills though. The place that had the most, we got there a little to late and there were about 25 dead already. Hope everyone had a night like we did, we will be back at it tommorrow.
