Do you seperate the Eastern Ratsnake from the Midland Ratsnake here? Not sure how the CNAH came up with that and making the Yellow the same as the Eastern Ratsnake and all that stuff. DNA? Wow! The PAFBC made me get a permit to keep my CB OLD Yellow Ratsnake....and my Greenish ones....(yellow X black)

Anyway-if you do then I have both photographed..by location. If not-no biggie-except to the PAFBC I guess...confused....

I was on a very busy highway this morning and I noticed a small blob near the fog line of my lane. As I got closer, I saw it was a turtle of some kind as I whizzed past.

I went up the road about a tenth of a mile and turned around before too much traffic came along and sped back to the turtle. By then it was in the right tire track of the lane and traffic was coming.

I turned onto the opposite shoulder and parked close to the white line and turned my flashers on.

I got out of my pick-up and walked back to the turtle before traffic got too close and picked him up.

After I got home I looked it up on your website, and I find it is a Eastern Painted.

I plan to release it later this afternoon.

Before I hear about letting nature take its course, and that I should have let the turtle chance the highway and possibly thin out the gene pool...

I like turtles, it wasnt some speedy critter which could cross a busy highway in seconds. It was a turtle. And I did what I did. Live with it. He/She will.

Period.

What a night, and I dont think we even seen the half of it! We were road cruising and seen spotteds everwhere. The one place it reminded me of cattle crossing the road. This was our first time in the spring doing this. We took my mother with and she loved it. The first one we seen she want to get out and get it to help it across the road. I was amazed at how into it she was. We also found a new place where they cross the road. My oldest daughter and mother at one point were running up the road infront of the vehicle grabbing them and moving them across the road. Was so cool! Also seen a pile of peepers crossing, we helped them to. It was sad to see all the road kills though. The place that had the most, we got there a little to late and there were about 25 dead already. Hope everyone had a night like we did, we will be back at it tommorrow.

Was just sitting here watching the Phils lose game 2 to the marlins and something crossed my mind....what does everyone think is the hardest snake to actually find when you're out looking for it in this state? For me, it has been the hognose snake by far. Ive been studying copperheads and rattlesnakes for 6 years and because of that have been out in the field every summer and even when Im out LOOKING for hognoses ive only found 4 adults and a yearling in all manners of habitat. Im not talking about the endangered or extirpated species either just the common, uncommon, and species of concern. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Just wondering... Has this happened to anyone else? I'm wondering how common it is to be fishing and actually catch a Northern Water Snake on the hook. This has happened to my husband several times, including 2x this afternoon. He was casting a 1-inch minnow swim bait for perch and he actually hooked and caught 2 different snakes. He safely removed both and set them free. I just can't believe that these snakes are so aggressive that they're going after fishing lures. LOL

Just a Thought... Does the status of gravid make the snake more susceptible to predation? From the recently posted photos by Mr Wolfe and others it looks like they would be too large to move effectively and would have limited options to seek alternate hiding areas if they were to be aggravated out of their nesting areas.

My friend went out herping not too long ago and saw some great things. She wanted, however, to keep one of the tortoises she saw. I protested!! Of course! So instead, I told her to get a few rescues. She did, and got one russian tortoise. The russian had been in an indoor enclosure and had an mvb on it. But my friend can't afford an mvb setup so she was thinking about what uvb to get, since she is also going to build an indoor enclosure for the little guy. She has mostly nocturnal reptiles or ones that don't require uvb so she is pretty clueless. What do you guys think? I told her to use the new zillas. The Desert Series 50 tubes (not the coils). I started using those for my beardie and a few of my temp indoor tort enclosures since early this year and they've been great. Any comments?

Just curious if anyonne heard anything about the study that was taking place up in the north central pa. I know that it is over with, I think last year was the last for it. I also think there main topic was to see what effect the timbering and logging industry had on the sankes. I talked to Bill Monroe a couple of times about it, he was heading it from what i understand but they were not really wanting to release any info about it. I do know that they had many snakes with transmitters in them and pit tags also. The last time i talked to him I believe they had around 200 snakes involved in the study the biggest was a 55" male black rattler. He did tell me that they were finding some interesting info that they previously did not know, thats why I am curious. I know one thing the area they were doing the study in has alot of snakes. Anyways, any info would be appreciated.
