Great work Phil.

So that we are on elusive species how about salamanders? I have yet to see four-toed salamanders (thought they are a little north) one that is a strange one is longtails. I only have seen 4 and I have checked that area countless times and once in a blue moon one will pop up. Seals should be more abundant but I have to travel 1.5 hr to one spot.

I will be working on my '07 records this fall. These include the last PA ribbons I have come across.

We need ribbons in the DB :)

And if not an expedited or endangered species, but ribbons and mtn earths are species of special concern, if we are including those they get my vote, but even more rare probably worm snake, Can't believe Kyle left that one out.

Shortheads seem common like you say just depends on where you are. I have a friend that finds them on a regular basis.

Ive never been out looking for a few snake species...the mountain earth, eastern massassauga, or shortheaded garter would be a few that ive never seen....but based on what others have told me there are populations of these snakes out there to be found if you know where to look. I found a rough green once accidentally near where there is still known populations of them. I agree about the ribbon snake as well...dont see nearly as many as i did even 6 years ago, but i still know of a few good pops. But the hognose has proven to be my mystery snake. Ive seen them in several different habitats, but even if i go to known areas where people have pics of them or ive been lucky enough to find one i almost always strike out! I will say for some reason including the D.O.R. last weekend Ive found the majority of them in September....thats a bit odd id think.

Hognose, good choice. I know where a population is, but would like to find them elsewhere in documented areas. I have checked where good habitat exists and have struck out everytime. Up until last week I would have said Mountain Earth Snake. :)
Eastern Ribbons have been hard to come by lately also.

Was just sitting here watching the Phils lose game 2 to the marlins and something crossed my mind....what does everyone think is the hardest snake to actually find when you're out looking for it in this state? For me, it has been the hognose snake by far. Ive been studying copperheads and rattlesnakes for 6 years and because of that have been out in the field every summer and even when Im out LOOKING for hognoses ive only found 4 adults and a yearling in all manners of habitat. Im not talking about the endangered or extirpated species either just the common, uncommon, and species of concern. Anyone else have any thoughts?
