So happy to find this forum! I just found 2 snakes in my backyard... one swimming in our pond:

And another sunning itself on a rock wall:

I'm pretty sure the first is a juvenile Northern Water snake. Any ideas on the second? Thanks so much.

First is a young watersnake....the second is a garter snake....the checkerboard pattern between the scales helps give it away every time even if the dorsal line isnt that visible.

Phil is right. I was just logging in to comment. That is one old garter.

Thank you both so much. Garter was my first guess as well - but I wasn't sure. Saw what looked to be a juvenile garter as well on the same rock wall earlier in the day, but of course I didn't have my camera handy. I'm pretty thrilled to have all these snakes here in the yard... It's been a number of years since I've seen any snakes in the area at all.
