Being layed up from my knee surgery gave me the idea to post some of my "best of" photos from my New Jersey copper project from April and May '09. Enjoy!

First snake at the den in late April was a Timber!

    First view of a Copperhead!

Our drift fence did not stop large male rattlesnakes.

    First copper in a trap

Weighing the small male...was too small for a transmitter

    Female under a bush

Looked like she could be gravid

cruising racer looking for young of years...

    ...Like this...run little copper!

    24 inch male copperhead

Just missed the cut for a transmitter...so frustrating!

    YOY in a trap.

    22 inch female

    20 inch female

Dark patterned and angry 16 inch male

29 inch gravid fermale...largest and last snake of the project. All in all 16 coppers were found at the den over a 6 week period. Cant wait to visit again this year.

Thanks for sharing! Sorry to hear about the knee.

Seeing your post reminded me of a question you had posed earlier in the year re: Philly zoo and northern vs southern in a display. I looked back at the pics and its still a southern in the display ... a detail that was completly lost on me as a "rookie".

Here's my question for you.. are racers normally that fat or was that one well fed due to the area?

That was a pretty large adult black racer....being that it was May it could have gobbled up a few skinks and some small snakes already, but all in all id guess it was just a larger male thus giving it the look of a heavier snake.

  5. The racer I saw this year might have ate that one for a snack. :)

Great photos Phil. Thanks for sharing. 7th one down is a great shot.
