Found some snakes and turtle and 2 big black bears estimated around 300lbs and 400lbs. They love them huckleberrys and blackberries. Second bear ended up surprising us at about 20 yards when I was tubing a snake.

Nice. Saw the records, glad you got the camera out this time. I never like running up on Black Bears, as they do not like me for some reason.

Bears have been very plentiful this year - We have them here in the yard nearly every day... lots of cubs and several that are absolutely tremendous. Went out yesterday to check on some wild berries and saw lots of evidence that they're enjoying the berries as well. Didn't run into any though - thankfully. Flipped some rocks and logs as well to see what we could find - but unfortunately came up empty handed. Today we've been home doing yard work. Found many juvenile toads, several species of salamander and baby wood frogs.

Yeah, I should have done yard work today but the weather they want the next week wont be good for snaking so I figured between the thunderstorms I can get the grass cut. Gotta have my priorities straight.LOL

Hi guys, I just wanted to comment 2 points on this line of topic. 1) I was struck by the irony that a group of rattlesnake stalkers seem not to be so fond of black bears. :-) 2) I just got back from MN where I spent 3 days studying and interacting with black bears. If you are interested in learning about their vocalizations please refer to http://www.bear.org for a self tutorial. And if you are seeking an additional level of protection while on your herping trips I recommend you carry a weak pepper spray.

After that saturday i did some research on some protection and i was under the impression that pepper spray will not stop a charging bear on a consistent basic.. I heard it will deter a bear that is bluffing, but I was looking for something that will work 99 percent of the time when it is not playing around. I love to see the bears, the only problem is the one spot where I go herping is very thick with scrub oaks and huckleberrys and I dont want to surprise a bear and have it panic. I know the odds are extremely rare that this will happen, but the only defense i have is a hook. A bear is no different than a rattler, they are all individuals, with there own personalities, and each one has to be dealt with as such. In my case it is all lack of knowledge of the animal, but that is why I am compfortable with snakes, I learned that there are some you can handle and there are just some that should be left alone. I respect them. Im going right now to check out that post you have above. Thanks
