I have 3 of these in my small pond, sized from about 1-1/2" to 4" and I have tentatively identified this one as a green frog. Am I correct?

Also, where do they go in the winter? We have a few inches of muck at the bottom of the pond, which I would like to clean before fall, but I will not if that is where they spend the winter.

Beside the pond are planting beds covered with woodchips and I wonder if they would dig into these areas to hibernate.

The reason I am asking is that we may have some construction (excavation) happening in this area in a few months and I wonder if we shouldn't postpone until early next summer so that the frogs are "awake", back in the pond, and not in the way.

Any advice (and a definitive identification!) will be appreciated. :)

I am located in southwestern PA

Indeed, a greenfrog- Rana clamitans melanota.

They will use the muck in the bottom in which to hibernate. If you have to do maintenance, you could relocate them to a nearby pond.

Thank you very much for the info.

So they spend the winter underwater? I never knew that. There is no nearby pond, and we have had these guys (or at least one of them) here for a couple of years so they should know what to do. Just to get the water a little cleaner I'll partially drain, then vacuum, the muck from the shallower part then refill the pond, leaving the muck at the bottom of the deepest part for the frogs to hibernate in.
