Lesions found on Hellbenders in Central PA

(3 posts)
  1. The last time I went out looking for Hellbenders in central PA, all of the ones I found had pretty big lesions on them. Has anyone encountered this? Any ideas about what it could be? Could there be some kind of disease? I've attached a photo here.

Also, you can see a video of our trip at my website: NatureBreak

  2. The video is great Vanessa.
The lesions do not sound good at all. I wonder if this is chemical related and hopefully not something like the bog turtles are going though.

I emailed you some of the information you asked for. But I may forward this to a few other people.

  3. I heard from a hellbender expert that they're actually wounds from the hellbenders fighting each other for territory!
