My friend went out herping not too long ago and saw some great things. She wanted, however, to keep one of the tortoises she saw. I protested!! Of course! So instead, I told her to get a few rescues. She did, and got one russian tortoise. The russian had been in an indoor enclosure and had an mvb on it. But my friend can't afford an mvb setup so she was thinking about what uvb to get, since she is also going to build an indoor enclosure for the little guy. She has mostly nocturnal reptiles or ones that don't require uvb so she is pretty clueless. What do you guys think? I told her to use the new zillas. The Desert Series 50 tubes (not the coils). I started using those for my beardie and a few of my temp indoor tort enclosures since early this year and they've been great. Any comments?

Thanks for keeping your friend from taking one out of the wild. Recuses and captive breed are the way to go.

I have never had a problem with the coil uvb's and have used them for a few years. I think the Desert 7% would work fine. You will also need a basking light also uva.

I have never kept a tortoise, but have kept a few turtles.

I agree, taking one out of the wild is, in my opinion, is against nature. Some people (non-reptile lovers) who just want free pets have done this. I've read about it. As far as coils, I don't really have a liking for them because I'm not too fond of the idea of having concentrated light. I feel tubes displace it better. Those new zillas are pretty good bulbs. I know a few people who use them for tortoises. Don't see why you can't.
